The federal government's independent assessment body has given the green light for the next phase of this ambitious project. Infrastructure Australia, the gatekeeper for major projects, has approved the development phase, which will see the project engage with contractors and finalize at least 40% of the design over the next two years.
Tim Parker, CEO of the High Speed Rail Authority, believes the government's commitment is already evident. He doesn't foresee any major obstacles, stating, "They've set us up, they've given us funding... I don't think we'll see anything other than support from the government."
The High Speed Rail Authority has identified the Sydney-Newcastle link as the priority, citing housing and employment benefits as key drivers. Mr. Parker emphasizes the project's potential to boost regional economies, improve housing, create local jobs, and significantly reduce travel times.
According to Infrastructure Australia's assessment report, stage 1 of the rail project will cover an impressive 194 kilometers, with a significant portion, 155 kilometers, running through tunnels. The expected tunnel diameter between Sydney and the Central Coast will limit train speeds to 200 kilometers per hour, but between the Central Coast and Newcastle, trains could reach a maximum speed of 320 kilometers per hour.
The initial stage of the project will include four stations: Broadmeadow in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, and two stations on the Central Coast, all scheduled for completion by 2037. Central Sydney will follow in 2039, and by 2042, the line will extend to Western Sydney Airport via Parramatta.
Mr. Parker envisions high-speed rail eventually connecting Brisbane with Melbourne, with this project being the crucial first step. He emphasizes, "Whatever we design for the first part must be suitable for those longer runs."
Transport Minister Catherine King has welcomed Infrastructure Australia's assessment, calling high-speed rail a "nation-shaping investment." She highlights its potential to unlock housing, create employment opportunities in regional areas, and contribute to ambitious carbon reduction targets.
