Demolition of Historic Winterstoke Road Bridge: A New Era for Weston-super-Mare (2026)

A sentimental goodbye to a historic bridge that played a crucial role in World War II efforts. But here's where it gets controversial...

The 85-year-old Winterstoke Road Bridge, a vital transport link in Weston-super-Mare, has been demolished to make way for a modern replacement. This bridge, built in 1941, served as a gateway to the RAF's aeroplane production factory in Oldmixon, handling approximately 20,000 vehicles daily at the time of its closure.

The demolition process, which included removing the entire structure and levelling its abutments and connecting road, was a complex operation. North Somerset Council ensured that most of the work was done on Christmas Day when trains were not running, paving the way for a stronger and more reliable bridge that will serve the community for the next 120 years.

An £11 million replacement bridge is set to open in spring 2027, and contractors Octavius Infrastructure will soon begin several months of piling and foundation works.

Mike Bell, leader of North Somerset Council, expressed gratitude to residents for their patience during the demolition, emphasizing the long-term benefits of this infrastructure investment.

A temporary footbridge will remain in place over the railway line throughout the construction of the new bridge.

This project raises questions about the balance between preserving historical landmarks and ensuring modern infrastructure meets the needs of a growing community. What do you think? Should we prioritize historical preservation or focus on future-proofing our infrastructure? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
