Exeter Roadworks Alert: Heavitree Road Closure in February - What You Need to Know (2026)

Get ready for more road disruptions in Exeter! The main route in and out of the city is set to undergo major construction works, causing yet another closure, just months after the last one.

Devon County Council is taking action to improve bus services by installing new traffic lights and a traffic island on Heavitree Road. This project aims to streamline bus journeys and make them more reliable. However, it's important to note that these improvements come at a cost of temporary inconvenience.

But here's where it gets controversial... The road has already been closed for an extended period last year due to gas pipe works. Despite the previous disruption, the county council believes the short-term pain will be worth it for the long-term gain.

The new traffic signals will give buses priority at the crossroads with Polsloe Road and Barrack Road, ensuring a smoother flow for public transport. The council states that this scheme, funded by the Department for Transport, is designed to cut down bus journey times and enhance the overall bus service reliability.

Jacqi Hodgson, the Green Party leader and cabinet member for climate change, acknowledges the disruptions around Heavitree but emphasizes that these works will significantly improve bus journeys moving forward.

And this is the part most people miss... The road closures will take place overnight from February 2nd and during the day from February 16th, with the entire project expected to wrap up within four weeks. A diversion route will be in place, guiding drivers through Magdalen Road, Barrack Road, Topsham Road, Holloway Street, Magdalen Street, Western Way, and back to Heavitree Road.

In addition to the traffic improvements, resurfacing work on Heavitree Road will also be carried out during the road closures.

So, Exeter residents, are you ready for these upcoming changes? While the improvements aim to benefit the city, it's natural to have differing opinions on the matter. What do you think? Will these disruptions be worth it in the end? Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below!
