A shocking case of murder has left the Gold Coast community reeling. Jason Thomas King, 53, has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of his landlord, Susan Walker, 74. The crime scene was Walker's home, where King rented a room. The murder weapon was a brutal and sadistic beating, with 54 external injuries found on Walker's body, including seven lacerations to the head and neck, and multiple broken ribs. An autopsy revealed that Walker had also been strangled, possibly using an extension cord found near the body. The Supreme Court jury's swift conviction, after less than four hours of deliberation, highlights the overwhelming evidence against King. During the trial, it emerged that King and another tenant had a heated argument, with King striking the other man with a mop bucket. This led to King being given four weeks to vacate the property. However, the court heard that King had been a long-term tenant, with Walker wanting to give him a second chance, as she believed in giving people a chance to turn their lives around. The night of the murder, neighbors reported loud bangs and screams, and CCTV footage showed no one else entering or leaving the property between Walker's arrival and King's capture approaching a neighbor's home. King's defense tried to explain the blood found on him and in the pool by suggesting he had washed his hands after finding Walker's body, but the prosecution pointed out the absence of blood on his body and the presence of a nearby sink. King's actions and statements, including lying to his neighbor and police, were deemed deliberate lies by the prosecution. The victim impact statements painted a picture of Walker as a kind, gentle, and generous person who was living her best life. Her family and friends expressed their grief and anger, emphasizing that Walker's death was a result of her kindness and compassion. The family's written statement called for a focus on preventive measures to address the root problems leading to femicide.
