A former World Cup-winning coach, Graham Smith, has taken on a unique and challenging role with Estonia's rugby team, a country that is often overlooked on the world rugby stage. Despite his impressive coaching record and success with England Women's team, Smith finds himself in a different league now, working tirelessly to build rugby from the ground up in Estonia.
Smith's journey to Estonia began unexpectedly when he was approached by the president of Kalev Rugby Club, a club facing an existential crisis. With his contract with London Irish Women's team having expired, Smith saw an opportunity and took the plunge, little knowing that it would lead to a permanent move and a new life in Tallinn.
"I came over for what I thought would be a short stint, but things escalated quickly. I found myself coaching the men's sevens in Malta and the women's sevens in Serbia. The women's team had only 12 players for their first international game of 2022. It was a challenging situation, but I saw it as an opportunity to make a real impact," Smith explained.
Estonia's rugby scene is a far cry from the professional leagues Smith is accustomed to. With limited resources and a small player base, the national team has struggled on the international stage. Their current losing streak of 14 games is a testament to the challenges they face. However, Smith remains optimistic and focused on the bigger picture.
"We are making progress, but it's an uphill battle. Our last few games have seen us lose by over 70 points. Some people question the value of these games, but they don't understand the importance of international rugby to us. We had to take the opportunity when it arose, despite the risks. Becoming a member of World Rugby is our goal, and these games are a crucial part of that process," he said.
Smith's role extends beyond the national team. He is also the head coach of Tallinn Kalev Rugby Club and the director of rugby for Estonian Rugby, overseeing the development of the sport in the country. He has implemented rugby programs in schools and universities, and this Friday, he will conduct the first-ever teacher training day for rugby in Estonia.
"We are growing, but we still have a long way to go. This weekend's match against Finland is a chance to show our progress. Reducing the gap on the scoreboard would be a huge achievement for us. Scoring a point against the Finns in the second half would be a small victory, but a significant step forward," Smith added.
Despite the challenges, Smith remains grateful for the opportunity Estonia has given him. His experience with the RFU, including being let go shortly after winning the World Cup, has made him appreciate the value of financial security.
"I don't question my decision to come here. I know I am valued and appreciated, and that's something I am forever grateful for. It's a tough life being away from my family, but I am in a position to provide for them, and that's what matters. As for my coaching record, I am proud of my achievements, and I don't think anyone will ever beat my record of Six Nations titles and Grand Slams," he concluded.
So, while Smith's current role may be a far cry from his previous successes, he is making a real impact and leaving a lasting legacy in Estonian rugby.
