Industrial hemp, a versatile agricultural marvel, is poised to revolutionize Australia's industry. With applications spanning food, fashion, and construction, its potential is immense.
The NSW government has recognized this, initiating discussions and developing strategies to foster the hemp industry. However, the current crop production is limited, with only a fraction of Australia's land dedicated to it.
Jeremy Buckingham, a member of the Legalise Cannabis Party, advocates for reduced regulations to unlock international opportunities. He highlights China's growing demand for hemp, presenting a lucrative prospect for Australian farmers.
Industrial hemp, distinct from its psychoactive cousin, is primarily used in Australia for crop rotation and hemp seed production. But there's a growing movement to utilize it for fiber and construction materials.
"The fiber can be woven into textiles, while the rest of the plant can be mixed with concrete to create hemp houses," Buckingham explains. "It's incredibly fire-resistant, an excellent insulator, and mold-resistant. Plus, it locks away carbon for generations."
Agrifutures, an Australian government-funded organization, has been conducting hemp trials across the country for eight years. Their goal? To determine the ideal growing conditions for this crop.
NSW agronomist John Muir believes successful winter variety trials could be a game-changer. "It improves soil, offers crop rotation, and can grow in summer and winter, even in cold, frosty conditions."
Muir adds, "Before these trials, we thought industrial hemp was a warm-season crop. But now, we see it can thrive in dry, winter conditions too."
Preliminary results from a winter dry land crop trial in Grenfell suggest farmers have more options than previously thought. Hemp is fast-growing and can enhance soil quality without additional inputs.
"It grows six meters in six months! That's an incredible biomass crop for fuel, construction, or hempcrete."
Farmer Bruce Simpson, hosting the Grenfell trial, has witnessed the hemp's rapid growth, reaching over two meters in three months with limited water.
"It's an excellent rotation crop, like canola to wheat. It increases soil humus, an organic matter essential for fertility."
Simpson continues, "Science shows high organic matter retains 40% more moisture, equivalent to an extra four inches of rain during the growing season. It's an exciting prospect for dry land farming."
