In a surprising turn of events, Westbourne Academy, located in Marlow Road, Ipswich, has implemented a unique strategy to tackle persistent student behavior issues. Principal Martin Higgon addressed parents, highlighting a "significant shift" in the academy's culture. The key to this transformation? The introduction of Yondr pouches, a simple yet effective solution to keep students focused.
"We've had a great start to the year with the successful implementation of Yondr pouches. Students have embraced this strategy, and the impact is evident," Higgon stated.
But here's where it gets controversial...
A Yondr pouch is a clever invention - a soft, durable case with a locking mechanism. Once a student's phone is placed inside, a teacher can lock it, preventing access to the screen and features. The phone remains with the student, but they can't use it during class. It's a simple yet powerful way to ensure students are present and engaged.
"We've seen a remarkable improvement in punctuality. The number of late students has decreased significantly," Higgon added.
And this is the part most people miss...
The school's 'inadequate' Ofsted rating last year was a wake-up call. The report found that staff and students were intimidated by poor behavior. In response, the school took a firm stance, leading to a 67% decrease in students missing their scheduled lessons.
But why did Westbourne Academy receive a termination warning?
An Ofsted report in July 2025 rated the school as 'inadequate', citing intimidating behavior from students towards staff. This led to teachers going on strike in May, a rare move in response to the school's inability to manage student behavior.
