A potential nuclear deal between Iran and the US is at the heart of a diplomatic storm, with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu determined to shape the negotiations to his country's advantage. Netanyahu, who has a complex relationship with US President Donald Trump, is set to meet with him on Wednesday. He aims to influence the talks by presenting a set of demands that go beyond Iran's nuclear program. Netanyahu wants the US to address Iran's ballistic missile program, its support for proxy forces, and human rights abuses. But here's where it gets controversial: these demands could potentially prolong the conflict between the US and Iran, and Netanyahu risks angering Trump and creating divisions within the Republican Party.
Speaking ahead of his trip to Washington, Netanyahu said he would present "our approach around our principles on the negotiations." He plans to provide Trump with new intelligence on Iran's military capabilities, including long-range ballistic missiles. This delicate task could be seen as a challenge to Trump's trusted aides, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who are reportedly open to a deal focused solely on Iran's nuclear program.
Iran, however, has made it clear that the US is their negotiating party. Esmail Baghaei, Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson, stated that it is up to America to decide whether to act independently of external pressures. Iran's Supreme National Security Council head, Ali Larijani, warned the US not to allow Netanyahu to dictate the terms of the nuclear negotiations, emphasizing Israel's destructive role in the process.
The situation is further complicated by Israel's growing alarm over a potential deal that might undermine its ambitions for regime change in Tehran. This comes as the US has agreed to reopen indirect talks with Iran, which began in Oman last Friday. Iran, too, faces internal political challenges, with reformist groups protesting the suppression of dissent and the arrest of Reformist Front leaders.
The Reformist Front has issued a statement expressing shock and warning that the regime's exclusionary tactics could strengthen violent factions supporting Israel. They called on Iran's president, Masoud Pezeshkian, to intervene and release their leadership.
Even if the upcoming talks focus solely on Iran's nuclear program, as Tehran desires, success is not guaranteed. Iran insists on its right to enrich uranium for nuclear power plants, a right granted in the 2015 deal but seemingly ruled out by Trump. The US has deployed military assets to the region, including the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln and three warships, capable of striking a wide range of Iranian targets.
