Joseph Parker himself believes he should have been allowed to continue, criticizing the referee's intervention. The former WBO heavyweight world champion, who appeared to be heading towards a victory in a closely contested match, is adamant that the fight was stopped prematurely.
But here's where it gets controversial... Referee Howard Foster, who stopped the fight, has a history with controversial stoppages, adding fuel to the fire. In the 11th round, with Parker leaning against the ropes and not throwing punches, Foster stepped in. While Parker's team felt he was managing to block the incoming blows, the referee's assessment was that Parker was trapped and vulnerable.
Fabio Wardley, however, saw things differently. He even suggested that the referee could have intervened sooner. Wardley admitted he saw the moment as a 'now or never' opportunity, knowing he needed to capitalize to secure the win. He highlighted a moment in the second round where he had Parker under pressure, only for the situation to be temporarily relieved by Parker's gumshield falling out.
Wardley didn't hold back, suggesting Parker used 'cute tricks' to buy time, which only fueled his determination. He knew he could finish Parker if he kept up the pressure.
Parker, in contrast, wants a rematch to settle the score. He acknowledged Wardley's toughness, congratulating him and expressing his desire to fight again. He felt he had Wardley in trouble multiple times, but Wardley's resilience impressed him.
