NASA's Moonshot: A Historic Journey to the Moon, Almost Ready for Liftoff
The iconic Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center witnessed a significant milestone as the Orion spacecraft, destined to carry four astronauts around the Moon, arrived in the late hours of Thursday. This marks the final stage before its grand launch, anticipated in early 2024.
Despite the government shutdown that commenced on October 1, NASA's Artemis II mission has been granted a special exemption, allowing the agency and its partners to forge ahead with preparations. This decision could see Artemis II blasting off as early as February 5, 2024, a thrilling prospect for space enthusiasts.
The Artemis II crew, comprising Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen, will embark on a historic 10-day journey, becoming the first humans to fly on the Orion spacecraft and the first to venture near the Moon since 1972. But here's where it gets personal: these astronauts will be the first to experience the frenzied first hours of a flight to the Moon in nearly half a century!
The Orion spacecraft, a Lockheed Martin creation, has been on a journey of its own, making several pit stops at Kennedy Space Center since departing the factory in May. It first visited a fueling station, where it was loaded with hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide propellants for its main engine and maneuvering thrusters. Additionally, high-pressure helium and ammonia coolant were pumped into its propulsion and thermal control systems.
The next destination was a building where the Launch Abort System, a tower-like structure, was attached to Orion. This system is designed to save the crew by pulling the capsule away from the rocket in case of a launch emergency. With all its components, Orion stands an impressive 67 feet tall.
Kennedy's engineers also added four ogive panels to protect the crew capsule during the initial launch phase. Then, Orion was moved to the Vehicle Assembly Building, where the NASA Space Launch System rocket awaits. In the coming days, a dramatic lift will see the 78,000-pound spacecraft hoisted high above the VAB's center aisle and placed atop the SLS rocket.
