In a shocking turn of events, a primary school teacher from Nottingham has received a lifetime ban from teaching after being caught drinking beer in front of his students. This incident raises serious questions about professionalism and the expectations placed on educators.
Steven Ward, who has been teaching at Southwark Primary School in Basford since September 2014, was reported to have consumed alcohol during class on multiple occasions in November 2023. Witnesses described seeing the 41-year-old sipping from a blue can that closely resembled Brewdog’s Punk IPA, which is known for its distinctive look.
According to testimonies, Mr. Ward attempted to mask the smell of alcohol by popping a mint into his mouth after each sip of the beer, which has an alcohol content of 5.4%. Some witnesses claimed he tried to conceal the cans in his bag. During a formal hearing regarding his conduct, Mr. Ward refuted these allegations, asserting that he was the target of a so-called "witch-hunt."
The hearing revealed conflicting accounts about his drinking habits. One witness stated he took a sip from the can every five minutes, while another observed him drinking from it approximately every quarter of an hour. Each sip was allegedly followed by him consuming a mint from a tin labeled Smints. On another occasion, a witness reported encountering a noticeable "strong smell of alcohol" upon entering an office where Mr. Ward was present, emphasizing that the odor was instantly detectable even in a large room.
Defending himself against the accusations, Mr. Ward told the investigation that drinking during work hours was something he would never do. He acknowledged the possibility of having placed a can on his desk but firmly denied that it contained any alcoholic beverage. However, the panel found substantial evidence indicating that he had indeed consumed alcohol during lessons on two specific dates: November 9 and November 10, 2023. Additionally, it was concluded that he appeared to be under the influence while at work on November 13.
The panel also noted Mr. Ward's troubling "lack of insight" into the unprofessional nature of his behavior. As a result, it was officially determined that Mr. Steven Ward is permanently barred from teaching in any educational setting across England, including schools, sixth form colleges, youth accommodations, or children's homes. He does have the option to appeal this decision on January 22, 2029.
