Rockhampton dodges a bullet as flood predictions are revised downward.
The city has been on high alert, bracing for potential moderate flooding. But in a welcome twist, the Fitzroy River, which runs through the heart of Rockhampton, is now expected to maintain a minor flood level. This comes as a relief to residents after a week of fluctuating forecasts.
Initially, the river was predicted to surge to a height of 8 meters, a concerning scenario for the community. However, the forecast was later adjusted to 7.5 meters and then further reduced to 7.3 meters on Thursday morning. This downward trend brought a sense of cautious optimism to the city.
Rockhampton's Mayor, Tony Williams, expressed his relief, stating that the revised prediction would likely result in fewer homes being affected. The initial forecast of 8 meters threatened 280 homes, but the revised numbers indicate a reduced impact.

Mayor Williams acknowledged that several sporting facilities and homes have been impacted, with water entering properties and yards. Andrew Wyatt, the State Emergency Service central region manager, assured the public that they are well-prepared for the aftermath. With 60 volunteers on standby, they are ready to tackle the clean-up process. Wyatt noted that while some properties have been affected, the damage is less severe than it could have been with higher flood levels.

Rockhampton Touch Football president Gary Benbow shared his concerns, stating that this is their seventh flood, and it will delay their competitions.
