Stephen Thompson's Retirement Plan: UFC White House Card & Colby Covington Fight (2026)

Imagine this: A legendary fighter, nearing the twilight of his career, envisions the perfect ending – a final, unforgettable performance on the grandest stage. That fighter is Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson, and the stage? A potential UFC card at the White House.

At 43 years old next month, Thompson is at a pivotal moment. He's currently without a fight scheduled, but he's staying in fighting shape. His last outing was a controversial decision loss to Gabriel Bonfim back in July, marking his third consecutive defeat. This sets the stage for a compelling narrative, doesn't it?

"There is a fight card, and I think everybody knows I have one fight left on my contract, and I want to see it through," Thompson shared with Middle Easy. "Everybody’s trying to get on it, obviously, the White House card. That would be a prime time to really lay down the gloves, get a good fight. To be able to make it through and finish out my contract with the UFC, that would be prime. That would be my dream actually, right there."

But here's where it gets interesting: the name Colby Covington has been floated as a potential opponent. Thompson's response? He's all in. "That would be cool. That's actually a great opponent right there," Thompson said. "I know he's a big Trump advocate, as well, so I know he would want to be on that card, too."

Thompson clarifies that his MMA journey will conclude with the UFC. However, he's open to competing in other combat sports if his time with the UFC comes to an end. "I feel like I can keep going, man," Thompson stated. "But really it's what the UFC wants. If they don't want me, I understand. Maybe (I'll) still do more of the analyst work, still be a part of the UFC. ... If they decide to allow me to keep going, I'll keep going."

The big question: Could this White House card be the perfect send-off for a true martial arts icon? What do you think about a potential Thompson vs. Covington match-up? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
