In a sport where every match matters, Taniela Tupou's all-round display against England provided a glimmer of hope for the Wallabies. However, Tupou himself isn't satisfied, and with Italy awaiting, he's determined to improve.
"It's a funny thing, people saying I looked good, but I was exhausted!" Tupou joked. "I felt cooked after just a few minutes, yet I managed to last a full 45."
But here's where it gets controversial... Tupou's impact went beyond the scrum. His counter-ruck in the seventh minute was a game-changer, a skill that showcased his versatility. Despite carrying the ball only four times, he still managed an impressive 17-metre gain, a testament to his impact.
And this is the part most people miss... Despite the praise, Tupou remains humble. He knows there's room for improvement, especially with the memory of the Florence defeat still fresh.
"I can't recall the details, but I know we lost. It's a lesson we must learn from. Italy is a formidable opponent, as seen in their performances against South Africa and England."
Tupou's honesty is refreshing. He recalls the post-match scenes in Florence, the executive visit, and Rennie's presence, followed by the narrow loss to Ireland in Dublin.
"We don't want to relive that this week. We aim for a win, whatever it takes. I trust Joe [Schmidt] and the staff to pick the best team. Italy deserves our full respect, just like England, Ireland, and France."
The Wallabies trained under perfect conditions in Udine, and Schmidt is likely to give Carter Gordon his Wallabies debut since the 2023 World Cup.
Tupou, however, isn't thinking too far ahead. He's savoring the present, dominating the card games, pulling pranks, and training hard.
"I'm enjoying every moment. Life's too short to be upset. I'm living and loving it. These Test matches are precious, and I aim to cherish them."
