Tom Wilson's impressive performance is rewriting the Washington Capitals' history books! The veteran winger is making waves, and his recent achievements are a testament to his skill and dedication.
During his 13th season with the Capitals, Wilson has been climbing the franchise's all-time goal-scoring list. After a dynamic performance against the New York Islanders, where he scored twice in a 4-1 victory, Wilson has secured his place as the eighth-highest goal scorer in Capitals history.
With 194 career goals, Wilson surpassed both Dave Christian (193 goals) and former teammate TJ Oshie (192 goals) on the all-time list.
Here's a glimpse at the Capitals' all-time goal leaders:
- Alex Ovechkin: 909 goals
- Peter Bondra: 472 goals
- Mike Gartner: 397 goals
- Nicklas Backstrom: 271 goals
- Mike Ridley: 218 goals
- Alexander Semin: 197 goals
- Bengt-Ake Gustafsson: 195 goals
- Tom Wilson: 194 goals
- Dave Christian: 193 goals
- TJ Oshie: 192 goals
Wilson's impact is undeniable. He previously tied Oshie's total earlier in the week by scoring an empty-net goal against the Toronto Maple Leafs. His recent performance earned him the title of the NHL's Third Star of the Week, with an impressive eight points (4 goals, 4 assists) in his last four games.
But here's where it gets interesting: Wilson has also scored the game-winning goal in two of the Capitals' last four games. This accomplishment places him in the ninth position for the most game-winning goals by a Capital, with a total of 30, surpassing the records of Oshie (28), Alexander Semin (28), Kelly Miller (29), and Dale Hunter (29).
His first goal against the Islanders came during a power play. A strategic pass from Ryan Leonard to Alex Ovechkin set up Wilson perfectly, who then skillfully guided the puck into the net. This goal marked his fifth power-play goal of the season, leading the Capitals and tying for the fourth-most in the NHL.
Wilson's second goal was a result of a misplay by Islanders' goaltender Ilya Sorokin, who handed Wilson the puck right in front of the empty net.
"I don’t think I’ve ever had one of those in my career,” Wilson said postgame. “A goalie turnover up the middle like that. I just made a bit of a read and got lucky to knock it down. I’ll take it.”
Adding an assist on an Aliaksei Protas empty-net goal, Wilson has accumulated 29 points (15 goals, 14 assists) in 26 games this season. He is on pace to achieve 47 goals, 44 assists, and 91 points. Wilson currently leads the Capitals in several key stats, including goals, points, power-play goals, power-play points (7), even-strength points (22), points-per-game (1.12), and hits (69).
Wilson is currently on a five-game point streak as of Tuesday night's game against the Los Angeles Kings. However, his performance against the Kings has been relatively subdued, with only four points (1 goal, 3 assists) in 21 career games.
